Suitland Parkway Tour
The Suitland Parkway Tour was held on May 29th. APACC hosted the event with DC Office of Planning, DPW, and D. in attendance. The purpose of the tour was to learn about what’s happening in the area and how it will be maintained. Through conversation arrangements with DPW should be made to mow the lawn. D. expressed that the less people walk through the area will allow the fruit trees to grow ripen. The entire area will be new and reoriented to the local community. There will be a 90 degree turn with a controlled intersection. The pollinators for trees are active in the space. Technically it is federal property with transfer jurisdiction of management. There is a fuel line and barge for jets at Andrew’s Airforce Base near the parkway. There’s plans for a raised crosswalk to slow traffic. D. suggested putting rumble strips in road to control traffic speed. All reuest can be made on the website. DPW suggested having a map that details and displays which agency is doing what. D. has plans to install green infrastructure then its management will take care of its then DOEE will take over. There are plenty of orchard trees in the green space from cherry trees, to peach trees. The community knows about this hidden gem only. Currently, the plans are at 60% and found out that an old cemetery is near the area from the Civil War era and needs to be cleared out before the project kicks off. Due to budget constraints D. will have to cut back 30% of its funding.
